Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS) was initiated by Central Java Provincial Muhammadiyah Institution in 1996. It was, then, followed by forming the committee of UNIMUS founder based on decree no.: SK.PW/III.B/9.6/001/1997.

     The committee founders consisted of Drs. H. Adim Dimyati, MS, dr. HM. Sulchan, M.Sc, Dr. Ir. H. Luthfi Djauhari, M.Sc, H. Setia Irianto, SE, Ir. Fauzie Fachrudin, dr. H. Shofa Chasani, Sp. PD, Drs. Samsudi Raharjo dan Drs. Yusni Amit, M.BA.

    After several intensive meetings, the committee agreed that there would be another Muhammadiyah university placed in Semarang. On August 4th 1999 Education Ministry issued UNIMUS operation license no. 139/D/O/1999.

    The departments covered in the license were Public Health Undergraduate Program (S1), Statistics Undergraduate Program (S1), Public Health Undergraduate Program (S.1), Statistics Undergraduate Program (S.1), Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Program (S.1), Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Program (S1), Electrical Engineering Diploma Program (DIII), Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Program (S1), Food Technology Undergraduate Program (S1), Agricultural Technology Undergraduate Program (S1), Management Undergraduate Program (S1), Company Administration Diploma Program (DIII), Accounting Diploma Program (DIII), English Undergraduate Program (S1), English Diploma Program (DIII), Japanese Undergraduate Program (S1).

    In its development, then, UNIMUS offered other programs namely; Public Health Undergraduate Non-Regular Program (S1 Non-Regular) in 2000, Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Non-Regular Program (S1 Non-Regular) in 2001; Nursing Undergraduate Program (S1) in 2002, and Nursing Undergraduate Non-Regular Program (S1 Non-Regular) in 2003.

    Based on decree of PWM number No. III.B/1.A/087/2001, all Muhammadiyah colleges in Semarang was united into a university, UNIMUS. Minister of Education officially, in 2002 issued decree from no. 28/D/O/2005 about additional program which were Nursing Diploma Program (D.III), Nutrition Diploma Program (D.III), Health Analyst Diploma Program (D.III).

    In the following years, UNIMUS opened other new programs namely Midwifery Diploma Program (D.III) (academic year 2006/2007 license no: 2294/D/T/2006), Accounting Undergraduate Program (S1) (SK.Dikti nomor 2092/D/T/2008), and S-1 Pendidikan Dokter (SK. Dikti nomor 2940/D/T/2008) serta Program NERS Profession ( SK. Dikti nomor 267/D/O/2008). The last three programs were in academic year 2008/2009. Therefore, in 2009, UNIMUS has 18 departments consists of 10 undergraduate Program, 7 diploma program, and 1 NERS Profession Program
